"Pretty in Pink"
This afghan is designed for baby or small child in mind. I found the most amazing pastel variegated yarns made by Caron Jumbo. The name of this Caron Jumbo yarn is Rosewood. The skein is 12 ozs and I found it at Joann's Yarn on sale for 50% off. When you are on a fixed income this is a huge savings. The yarn is almost as large as their Caron One Pound but is soft and shiny just like their Simply Soft. However, finding a good way to use variegated yarn can be a bit tricky. My solution was to design my own afghan. Well, I actually did not make most of the patterns included but rather combined several patterns into one amazing blanket.
My grandchildren are grown so I am looking forward to being a great-grandma and this blanket pattern will go into the treasure chest for the great-grandchildren. I am building a special box for future grandchildren including my hand-made items (both crochet, decoupage and hand painted items) plus copies of books that my son enjoyed as a child and one that I loved as well.
Crochet is all about expressing your own creativity and your loving attention to your craft. It would be easy to take my idea here and change it up to reflect your color choices and your choices of squares. I thought it was great fun to learn all these new patterns. This afghan would be lovely with repeated squares rather than all different.
There are two versions of this afghan. The larger one is as follows and should fit a twin size bed:
Finished size is approx. 54" by 54". The outer large squares are 8" with 20 total. The center rows of smaller squares are 6" with 12 in total. The center square is 12" x 12" and only one. The mini squares are 4" with 28 in total and fit inside the outer ring of squares. The outer squares are each different patterns. The mini squares ring are 2 different patterns and the small ring are 2 different patterns. There is a 3" border around the whole blanket.
The smaller version of this afghan will be as follows and should fit a crib nicely:
Finished size is approx. 46" x 46". The outer large squares are 8" with 16 total. The center rows of smaller squares are 6" with 12 in total. The center square is 12" x 12". The outer squares are each different patterns. There is a 3" border around the whole blanket.
Yarn: 24 ozs of Caron Rosewood (pink variegated) (2-16 oz. skeins)
18 ozs (3 skeins) off white Simply Soft by Caron
8 ozs Soft White by Red Heart Super Saver, about 4 ozs of wheat (beige) any brand, a very small skein of pure white for the border, and a scrap amount of baby pink.
Hook size: 5.5 (I), 5 (H), G 4.25 (G), 4 (F). Each pattern gives the hook size. My notes will let you know if a different size is needed to accomplish the size of the squares needed here. The goal is to end up with 8" squares for the large, 6" squares for the small, and 4" squares for the mini. The center square must be 12". The hook sizes are based on how I crochet so the gauge would be one dc is 3/4 inch tall done with an H hook and a dc is 1" tall done with a G hook.
All of the basic stitches are used but primarily will be single, double, half-double and triple. (Each pattern gives a list of stitches needed and special instructions.) Special stitches are all explained with each pattern. You will find links for each square either to finding the written pattern or the tutorial if there is one.
If you have any problems with any of the instructions, feel free to contact me and I will help ASAP...well, do the best I can. :) This was a lot of fun to make. I hope you enjoy it as well. You really cannot tell by the pics here but the afghan turned out really beautiful!
